Garden Ant Control

Description

Worker ants are approx 3-4mm long and dark brown - black in colour. A queen ant is much larger at up to 10mm.

Biology

Garden ants will mostly nest outside in lawns, under paths, walls and footings etc.Households and businesses are affected by worker ants foraging for foods especially those that are sweet. On warm days during the summer winged males and females take flight to mate ('Flying ants') this only lasts a few hours after which the female will dig in to sand or soil ready to start a new colony in the spring.

Treatment

Long term ant control is best achieved by using gel or liquid baits, these are taken back to the nest by worker ants and will eradicate the colony. If the nest can be located by tracing the worker ants, a powder insecticide can be applied direct to the ant nest.
